5 Winter Tire Tips

Winter weather in Northeast Ohio ranges from freezing rain, sleet and ice to inches (and sometimes even a foot or more) of snow. When you're driving in these dicey conditions, you need winter tires with the right grip, braking and handling to stay as safe and confident as possible on the road.

Made with softer rubber compounds that stay flexible in the cold and tread patterns that dig into snow and ice, winter tires help you steer and stop better. They also keep anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control and all-wheel drive capabilities performing at their best.

At Tire Source, the snow tire source, we recommend purchasing snow tires to help keep you and your loved ones safe when temps drop below 45 degrees. We offer the following five winter tire tips on picking out tires and properly maintaining them:
  • Purchase a complete set of four identical snow tires. Just installing two winter tires will throw off your vehicle's balance of traction and handling, possibly causing a spin-out.
  • Choose tires with the mountain snowflake symbol. This symbol, located on the sidewall of a winter tire, means it meets stringent severe winter traction standards. All-weather tires are marked with M+S (mud and snow) but are not designed for use in extreme winter conditions.
  • Select winter tires that are the right size for your vehicle. Tires that are too big or too small may damage your vehicle.
  • Make sure you get the right tread depth. Good winter tires will offer at least 6/32-inch tread or more.
  • In the spring, remove the snow tires. Snow tires can be noisier than all-season tires and will wear down more quickly in warm weather.
When you're ready to make your snow tire purchase, visit one of our five Northeast Ohio Tire Source auto repair shop locations. We can help you choose the right tire at a reasonable price for your vehicle this winter.
