Basic Tire Care

posted on

A little tire care goes a long way...

Americans spend millions of dollars each year purchasing tires. Unfortunately, they don't spend much time caring for them. However, performing some simple tire maintenance will keep you safe and add value to your car, as well as save you money and possible problems down the road.

To maximize the use and wear of your tires:

  • Make sure they are properly inflated to your vehicle or tire manufacturer’s specifications and check for wear. Tire damage is most often caused by improper inflation. Not only does it contribute to uneven and premature wear, it decreases your fuel economy. To determine the proper tire pressure, consult your owner’s manual or read the tire’s sidewall. Every other week, you should check your tire pressure and check for leaks. In addition, check the depth of the tread. This small but important task will enhance your car’s performance and your safety.
  • Keep your wheels in alignment. Improper alignment is another cause of uneven and early tire wear. Have your alignment checked every year (about every 10,000 miles) by a professional. Sooner if you notice your vehicle is pulling to one side.
  • Balance your tires. If your car shakes or there is vibration in your steering wheel, your tires are probably out of balance. This condition could cause damage to both your suspension and your tires.
  • Rotate your tires. This helps to extend the life of your tires by avoiding uneven wear that can happen even if your vehicle is in perfect mechanical condition. Contact a local Gemini Car Care location to learn when your tires should be rotated.
